Do you have a particular scent that is more than just a good aroma for your home? Something that upon the first sniff, it transports you back to a different time or place?

That is what Tenisha Dotstry of Fair Winds Candle Company aims to bring to every customer.

As a Navy veteran and military spouse, she cultivates products that combine her military service and experiences with the comforts of a long-lasting candle, wax melt, or room and linen spray.

From Craft Vendor to Candle Maker

After leaving active-duty, Tenisha was exploring her art career through painting and basket weaving. She was attending vendor fairs and finding her path while using her creativity and artistic talents.

But when the pandemic began and in-person events were on hold, she did what every military spouse does: she pivoted.

She found a person selling an industrial candle maker at a steal, and she decided to try candle-making as a side gig until in-person events were back. She thought that she would have a few orders; upon launching her website in August 2020, she almost immediately sold out of her products!

Tenisha wanted to use her time in the Navy and experience as a military spouse in her scents. She says it best:

Fair Winds Candle Company provides high quality candles made of coconut wax and unique fragrances to celebrate all aspects of the military life helping ease the transitions from one home to the next through smells that are familiar and comforting. My goal is to help you make ‘scents’ of Navy life.

Scents such as Gig Line, Fair Winds, Goat Locker, Tidewater, and more are bound to evoke memories for anybody. While many have a military angle, there are plenty of scents that are applicable and desirable to all.

I have been a fan of Fair Winds Candle Co. since last year. I was introduced to Tenisha and her company through AMSE, and The Military Mom Collective has been partnering with her for various events in the past year. Tenisha is committed to not only her business but to her connections within the military community, and we appreciate her so much.

My personal favorite scent is Study Hours. It has notes of smoked sandalwood, amber, and suede. It reminds me of sitting in a library or used bookstore and smelling all the books (if you know, you know). I have never been active-duty, and this candle scent hits me with all the feelings and emotions.
