International Moon Day marks the anniversary of the first landing by humans on the Moon as part of the Apollo 11 lunar mission. Apollo 11 carried the first humans to the moon with Astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin stepping foot on the lunar surface.

What better way to celebrate Moon Day and our amazing Lunar neighbor than by adding some new books about the moon to your reading list! (Or check them out next time you visit your local library!)   I’ll also include some of my favorite books about space for adults too.

What Is The Moon- Lift the flap book – perfect for young readers!  My daughter got this when she was 3 years old and she is still flipping though it at 5.  The flaps have held up and she loves learning about the bunny on the moon!

Moon! Earth’s Best Friend I’m not sure if it’s the adorable faces on the moon or the cute story, but my daughter also loves this book!

Lady Bug Launch “Based on a true story, this out-of-this-world picture book follows the exciting scientific journey of a chica and a chinita with sky-high aspirations”  We first heard of this title when the author did a visit to our local indie bookstore here in Northern Virginia.  We loved learning about the determination of this all girl classroom!

Luna Muna and Luna Muna Space Cafe by astronaut Kellie Gerardi!  Kelli served as a payload specialist with Virgin Galactic and is slated to fly another in the coming years. The Luna Muna Books are perfect for any aspiring astronauts!

Did you know that Astronaut Alan Shepard played golf on the moon?  In David A. Kelly’s book “Tee Time on the Moon” readers learn not just about the moon missions, but also a secret Alan Shepard kept hidden in his boots!

Counting on Katherine – we loved learning how because of mathematicians like Katherine Johnson, we were able to not only launch into space, but go to the moon!  And adults can learn more about Katherine Johnson in the book Hidden Figures

If your young reader is looking for something more advanced, join Jack and Annie on their next journey in Magic Tree House #8 Midnight on the Moon.  Magic Tree House books are perfect for readers learning to enjoy chapter books.

Moonwalk: The First Trip to the Moon is another great early chapter book with actual photographs from the first moon landing.

The Moon: Discover the Mysteries of Earth’s Closest Neighbor We are big fans of DK books in our house!  I think everytime we go to the library one of my kids is checking out a new book to learn more facts about their favorite subjects.

And even though her husband was only on the International Space Station and not on the Moon, I can’t have a list of our favorite space books without including Military Spouse Author and friend of Military Mom Collective, Stacey Morgan’s “The Astronaut’s Wife: How Launching My Husband into Outer Space Changed the Way I Live on Earth.”  This book is an inspirational and uplifting memoir that every military spouse should read!
