MOMS – It’s time for us to step up to the plate and get to grilling!

All too often, the grilling is left to the guys. Well, it’s time for that to end.

I’m here to tell you that grilling is not scary! I especially love using my pellet grill. It’s like a giant, outdoor crockpot – but better. It’s easier to clean, and the complex flavor profile from the smoke can’t be replicated any other way.

How I Started Grilling

"Smoking with Mrs. Meat" woman holding beer and plate of smoked BBQ chicken, smoked corn, and sauteed kaleMy husband left for a year-long deployment the week lockdown started. My pandemic passion project was learning to master his smoker. I’m not a chef or even that good of a cook really. But I love experimenting with flavors.

I ditched my Instant Pot and Crockpot for the grill and leveled up my game. I even won 2nd place in a global backyard BBQ contest just a few months into my grilling journey. As a pilot in the Navy, my husband’s call sign is MEAT. I definitely earned my title as Mrs. Meat! So I’m here to light a fire under you and help you get grilling!

What do you need to start grilling? Food and a grill.

There are a ton of devices and appliances some people swear by, but honestly, just use what works best for you and makes your life easier! My favorites? Bear claws for pulled pork, a wireless temperature probe, and these rubs and sauces from Grill Your Ass Off.

What’s Smokin’?

Join me as I smoke some chicken using my favorite seasonings, sauces, and rubs from Grill Your Ass Off! Be sure to watch until the end for my original recipe for Salted Caramel S’mores with Whiskey Smoked Sea Salt (yummmmmm!).

Want to make this too? Here’s what I used!

I always forget what temperature to cook each meat (and forgot to mention in the video above!). So when you grill, especially when smoking, cooking time will vary depending on your specific grill/smoker and also the current weather conditions. But having a handy reminder of temperature guidelines like this is very helpful!

And here are my award-winning recipes for Lemon Smoked BBQ chicken with my homemade BBQ sauce (which includes WINE!).

Amie Glazier
Originally from Denver, Amie enjoyed a break from cold winters while stationed in various southern locales with her husband, who is a pilot in the Navy. But they currently live outside Seattle, and she is now learning to love the rain. Amie and her husband have four small children who eat dinosaur chicken nuggets like they're going extinct and love all things aviation. After graduating with her B.A. in English, Amie worked in various fields with each military move, but never stopped writing. She has been a contributor for The Military Mom Collective since it was founded and finds joy in helping other moms connect in community. When she’s not writing or herding her adorable brood, you can find Amie working out at the local cross fit gym, binge-watching Hallmark movies, and actually enjoying chemistry while home-brewing with her husband. Amie is proud to be co-owner and Director of Partnerships for MilMC to help military families connect worldwide.
