Four things to try this Fall in Fairbanks, Alaska

People visit Alaska for the midnight sun and come in the winter for the Northern Lights, but what about everyone who lives there and gets to appreciate fall too?! We were lucky enough to spend three autumns in Fairbanks, stationed at Ft. Wainwright, and I loved all of them. Whether you’re at Eielson Airforce Base or Ft. Wainwright, here are 4 things to try this fall in Fairbanks, Alaska-

Fish or Walk around Chena Lakes

Fishing in the fall may not sound like a typical activity, but if you’re looking to squeeze in that last bit of outdoor fun, may I suggest fishing at Chena Lakes, before your choice is ice-fishing?

Fall in Alaska feels like living on borrowed time, so spend your nights catching trout or taking a walk around the lake. If you don’t have your own gear, the Outdoor Recreation Center on Ft. Wainwright rents fishing equipment.

2. Visit Arctic Harvest

Arctic Harvest is a family owned farm and distillery in North Pole, AK. Those of you stationed at Eielson AFB are lucky that it’s close to you! During the fall they have a corn maze for the kids that will be open “until the weather destroys it.” This could mean tomorrow or October. Fingers crossed for a later snow to enjoy the crisp evenings around the firepits.

While you’re there, grown ups can try one of their AK grown cocktails. Follow Arctic Harvest on Facebook to see their weekend schedule of food trucks, a petting zoo and announcement of when their pumpkin patch will open.

3. Hike Trails- Skyline Ridge

Before the snow flies, check out some local fall trails in the Fairbanks area!

Our family favorite is Skyline Ridge Trail.

The birch trees are gorgeous in the fall and is an easy hike with kids. Our family started geocaching on Fairbanks trails, which added a fun element to our hikes.

4. See the Northern Lights without the cold

The Northern Lights are magical anytime of year, but fall is a great time to see them without getting suited up in all your snow gear. Around the 20th of September the solar activity is increased during the equinox and you have a greater chance to see the aurora.
