If you’re anything like me, life doesn’t pause because it’s PCS season. You’re still juggling a million little moments that need you. Outdoor toys and furniture are usually the last thing on my mind. But with an early summer PCS ahead of us, I know that familiar outdoor stuff will bring a small sense of normalcy when we’re unpacking at our next assignment, giving the kids a place to play, burn off energy, and feel at home.
How I Prep Outdoor Items

Step 1: Quick Sweep
Grab a coffee and do a lap around the yard, patio, garage, and shed. I mentally sort everything into three categories:
- Taking with us
- Selling or donating
- Absolutely not
If it’s broken, missing parts, or hasn’t been touched since the last duty station, let it go.
Step 2: Be Real About What Movers Will Take
Movers won’t take:
- Propane tanks
- Gas, oil, or lawn chemicals
- Anything flammable
I separate those items early, so we are prepared to dispose of them properly.
Step 3: Clean It Like an Inspector Is Watching
Especially for OCONUS moves, outdoor items must be clean.
- Hose off bikes, scooters, etc.
- Clean toys and furniture
- Let everything dry fully
Step 4: Break It Down
- Play structures
- Trampolines
- Outdoor tables and chairs
I put parts into a zip-up bag, label them, and tape them to the item.
Step 5: Prep “Messy” Stuff
- Drain water tables, sprinklers, and hoses
- Remove batteries from toys
This is one of those annoying steps that really pays off.
My Honest Tips
- Start outdoor prep earlier than you think
- Don’t move stuff just because you have the weight
- Give yourself grace.
A little prep saves stress and frustration later. Anything that makes unpacking easier at the next duty station is a win in my book.
