It is no secret that being in the water during summer months is unavoidable. We just bought a home with a pool and now more than ever, I want to ensure my children are safe around water.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO):Â
- Drowning is the 3rd leading cause of unintentional injury death worldwide, accounting for 7% of all injury-related deaths.
- There are an estimated 236 000 annual drowning deaths worldwide.
Global estimates may significantly underestimate the actual public health problem related to drowning. - Children, males and individuals with increased access to water are most at risk of drowning.
Knowing these statistics can be scary. Below are 5 ways that you can ensure you, family, and friends are ready and safe for water activities this summer:
- Designate a water monitor: Monitoring someone to watch the water at all times can ensure that all areas are covered. This will help provide close and constant attention to children you are supervising on or near the water.
- Enroll in ISR/swim lessons: My children are currently enrolled in Infant Swimming Resource (ISR) lessons and I am so glad we did, especially now with owning a pool. Swim lessons are another great way to have children become familiar and comfortable with the water and know how to reach a safety point in the event something unfortunate were to happen.
- Never swim alone: Whether you are an adult in the water or your children are in the water, you should never swim alone. Having a swim buddy can bring accountability to the environment as well as a fun experience.
- Learn CPR: In the event of an unfortunate event, knowing how to handle the situation is key. Being able to conduct Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) can literally save someone’s life. Effective CPR procedures are always changing, so be sure to check the Red Cross site for the latest steps on how to conduct CPR.
- Wear a lifejacket: When in doubt – wear a lifejacket. The Red Cross has recommended that children, inexperienced swimmers, and boaters should all wear U.S. Coast Guard approved life jackets.Â
